Leisure marketing: 5 things you can do to make next year’s holiday shopping easier for your customers.

 

A new survey shows that planning for the holidays is creating more work than ever.

Last year, Americans spent 1 full work week getting ready for the holidays. Here are 5 things you can do to help.

If the latest Consumer Reports poll is correct, I’m not the only American who has turned the holidays into work.

According to this year’s CR Holiday Shopping Poll, your customers will spend as much time getting ready for the holidays as they would on a typical week of work.

When it’s all over, the average American will spend 42 hours on shopping, wrapping and visiting:

  • On average Americans will spend 15 hours shopping for gifts.
  • Women will spend  20 hours versus just 10 for men.
  • Shoppers expect to wait in store check out lines for about 3 1/2 hours
  • Americans plan to spend 3 hours wrapping gifts.
  • Americans anticipate that they will devote about an hour to returning holiday gifts.
  • Americans will spend almost 1 full day (22 hours) attending holiday parties and traveling to and from their holiday destinations.

 

Here are 5 things you can do to help your customers with their holiday shopping:

You’ve got a real opportunity to attract more business this holiday season by showing your customers how you can give them back some of the time that the holidays have stolen from them.

  1. If you’re not doing it already, offer free gift wrap, shipping and local delivery.
  2. Encourage customers who are visiting your store store to shop online if it will save them time and money.
  3. Offer a more generous return policy, and after Christmas staff up in customer service to keep those lines short.
  4. Do little things to reduce the hassles they’ll experience in store, like adding extra staff at the cash register and providing a cash register concierge to assist with questions while they’re in line.
  5. Offer them little How To cards in store to show them how they can reduce the amount of time or make more fun the time they spend shopping and gift wrapping.
